Home Improvement Trends In 2016

Nearly everyone desires a low maintenance home, but the millennial generation is at the top of the list. Many home improvements today focus on making a home lower maintenance for all generations while other home improvements look to add a more modern design or increase energy efficiency. Let's outline the eight top home improvement trends for 2016.

Kitchen Trends

Do you think plain old stainless steel appliances are top of the line? Think again. Many home renovations are including stainless steel in new looks with attractive features. Take, for instance, the slate appliance line that GE recently introduced in a graphite finish. Kitchen Aid, Samsung and LG have also introduced new types of stainless steel finishes that offer special features such as hiding fingerprints better as well as providing a more modern appearance. Luxury appliances have also become more prevalent in homes with top brands like Jenn-Air, Thermador and Viking being used.

Quartz countertops, accent walls, white cabinetry and unique backsplashes are all top kitchen design trends this year. Other top kitchen trends to watch for include two-tone kitchen cabinetry, large cabinets versus lower cabinets in different colors or a different color cabinetry used on the island as opposed to the main kitchen cabinets. Drawers are also being used more precalently into kitchens instead of the traditional cabinetry with shelves.

Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters continue to be in high demand as they appeal for not only delivering water as needed, but also increasing the overall energy efficiency of the home. Additionally, smart water heaters have also hit the market which allows for water consumption to be tracked in real time.

Living Rooms Made for Family Time

Instead of a technology-infected living room that has the big screen TV and surround sound, many people are opting for a place to ditch the technology and curl up with a good book or engage in conversation with family members or friends.

Reflecting on Bathrooms

Medicine cabinets have become a dated trend and statement mirrors have become popular. From a vintage piece to ornate wood frames, the sky is the limit in choosing a unique bathroom mirror. Large format tiles are also being utilized more in roomier bathroom spaces.

Lighting a Fire

Fire features and fireplaces are making their way into more and more homes across the country. From electric to gas to wood burning, there are so many options to choose from and all create the unique warm ambiance.

Bedroom Upgrades

Converting the attic into a bedroom space has become a top home improvement trend for many homeowners. Additionally, statement walls where the bed is centered are also becoming more common. From switching up the paint color on one wall to installing rustic wood or wallpaper, the possibilities are endless.

Opening up Spaces

If an open floor plan does not currently exist in a home, then homeowners are opting for taking out walls to create an open concept floor plan.

Replacing Doors and Windows

Energy efficiency is one of the top reasons to look into replacing doors or windows. Last year, homeowners that replaced windows received 75 percent of the total cost back. While a 2015 Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report showed that steel entry door replacement had the best return on investment. Replacing the garage door is also a top renovation project that has a high ROI. On average a garage door replacement will cost around $ 964, with $ 848 expected to be recouped at the time of resale.

Adding more value to your home can easily be done through a variety of home improvements. While very few home improvement projects allow for you to recoup 100 percent back of the total cost, they do allow for more enjoyment out of the spaces and potentially a higher sales price when going to resell.

7 Creative Ways to Add Colors to Your Home Decor

Are you scared of color because you are scared of committing? Color is an effective way to bring personality, and create a focal point in your home's spaces. Unexpected utilization of colors speaks volumes about your personal style as well as sets your home apart.

Decorating your space, in terms of color, should not be challenging. Actually, it's as effortless as 60-30-10. If you look at some of the example rooms in a designer's portfolio, or in magazines, you'll confirm this to be true – most rooms are invariably divided in percentages of 60-30-10. So why is this the case? It's because of the human tension to view an overall theme in 60% hue, unifying the coloration, followed by 30% that entails visual interest while the remaining 10% adds some little spark.

When handling your home décor, you should divide them into these percentages:

  • 10% of an accent color
  • 30% of secondary color
  • 60% of a dominant color

The following are some of the creative ways to add colors to your home décor:

1. Use Color to Get Emotional

Everyone associates colors with something they represent. For instance, red can represent warmth, yellow; the sun, blue; the sea and air, and green often represent trees. Generally, all these are considered to be emotional responses to color, compared to intellectual responses. Therefore, you can utilize the emotional associations to bring out their greatest effects within a space. You can do so by deciding on the emotional impact you desire in a room. Do you want it to be lively? If yes, then yellows and reds are the ideal choices. Do you desire subdued? If yes, then browns and blues are the best.

It's really important to note is that the color you settle forought to reflect the activities performed in its space. For instance, if it's for rest, such as a family room or a bedroom, you need to settle for darker values of color which relate to restfulness such as browns, blues and greens.

2. Consider Contrast

High contrast spaces appear clear as well as more defined compared to a space that includes low contrasts. A high contrast space is one that utilizes dark and light values of color in combination with light gold. Low contrast rooms, on the other hand, utilize sage green with saffron yellow. The golden rule is to use high contrast to improve your room's formality and high contrast colors to introduce soothing qualities.

When paired, white and black are formal in appearance. They're not like a tuxedo. Combining black and white is less of a color value and more of subtracting or adding light. However, white with beige boasts a low contrast coupled with a feeling of calmness. By combining black and white with gray, you'll enjoy a low key atmosphere and it also helps to create a restful space.

3. Flow with Color

For you to create a color flow from a single room to another, all you need to do is select a color you use in one room and then restate it differently in an adjoining space. For instance, is your sofa green? You can utilize the same green for seat fabrics in your dining room. Utilize the color in smaller and larger degrees as you move around the home. The same green for the living room sofa, earlier mentioned, also applies to lampshades in your family room. You can also choose to place mats inside the kitchen.

4. Consider Adding Color to Your Furniture Pieces

Bold color choices are not restricted to walls. Therefore, why not jazz up your old furniture piece (s) that you might have fallen out of love with? For instance, you can paint your walls yellow, and then accent your furniture with pops of aqua. Regardless of your locale's color, it's possible to select colors that reflect the region you live in. The other painless way to select colors is by opting for seasonal color variations. Fall colors such as browns, russets, and mustard yellows will create a subdued and calm space that's ideal for resting. On the other hand, spring colors tend to be more uplifting. Saffron yellow, lilac and pinks apart a fresh and naïve look to your room.

5. Consider Adding Some Mother Nature

Green plants, as well as flowering ones, usually add personality, fragrance, color, and great feelings to a living room. For those that lack a green thumb, they should ask a home center, or nursery, for recommendations of plants that need no or little care. If you are far from your home for long, you should settle for the incredible ones available in the market now. Look for great looking flowers, foliage and plants that only require dusting.

6. Have a Color Scheme

Choosing the right color scheme for your room can be challenging. Fortunately, there's a way to simplify the process. You can do so by utilizing a color wheel, and then narrowing down your selection to two color schemes. Of course, there are more. However, the following are not only effective, but are also excellent places to start:

  • Analogous color scheme – Rooms that utilize this color scheme are more muted, restful and casual when it comes to coloration.
  • Complementary color scheme – Rooms that employ this color scheme offer a clear separation of colors.

7. Think about Seasonal and Local Colors

By studying past color schemes you'll certainly be able to create a room's color by incorporating the already accepted color schemes.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to decorating a home, not everyone has the time and money to conduct a complete makeover. Fortunately, there are plenty of creative ways to pimp your home décor using colors. Employ the above strategies and you'll certainly be able to transform the look and feel of your home. There's no doubt about that.

The Use of Color to Express Personality in Your Interior Design and Decorating

Nothing is more personal than color! Nothing expresses your personality with clearer or more unmistakable attraction than color. The primary and secondary colors are six in all, with three colors per category. The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. The secondary colors, which are combinations of the primary colors, are orange, green, and violet.

Color is a very deep and complex subject from the following viewpoints: scientifically, emotionally, visually, spiritually, and intellectually. It touches every aspect of our lives with meaning and symbolism. Therefore, it is helpful to understand color and how it affects your life. Your understanding of color does not have to be at the PhD level. Just a good, solid, basic understanding will do.

First and foremost, color has its source in light, and natural light comes from the sun. Therefore, color is how you light it! Color is perceived based on the source of light that is used to illuminate objects, and the way color is absorbed and reflected back to your eye.

Color can be described in three terms … Hue, Value, and Intensity.

Hue means the name of the color. Value means the relative lightness or darkness of a color. Intensity means how dull or vivid the color is.

Red suggests fire and blood. It is associated with activity, aggression, and passion. It is interesting to know that the aggressive and advancing quality of red makes a room in which it is used seem smaller in appearance.

Yellow looks most like the sun, as it expresses the quality that the sun looks to give out. With light and warmth of the sun, we are cheered as well as made more light-hearted. Yellow in a room will produce similar feelings under normal conditions.

Blue has an opposite effect from red. Its' reactions are restraint, coolness, repose, and distance. By association, one thoughts of a clear blue sky and the cool breezes from the blue waters of the ocean.

Orange is always warm and advancing, as well as cheerful, vibrant, and glowing. To a lesser degree, orange has some of the effects of the colors red and yellow.

Green is the union of yellow and blue, and expresses the qualities of both. Nothing could be more restful, soothing, and agreeable than the cheering and cooling effects of a seat in the shade upon the green grass under luxuriant green trees, in the middle of a hot day. It is easy to see the practical application of this in decorative art and interiors. In a sense , it is almost a neutral, as it is a great backdrop color for any other color, as evidenced in nature.

Violet, or purple, historically has been the color of royalty, as well as a color that represents intelligence and creativity. It has the qualities of red and blue.

Incomplete as the above descriptions are, they're sufficient to establish the point that personal qualities or individual character visits can certainly be expressed in terms of color, or hue .

Value, the second attribute of color, is the quality of lightness or darkness of a color. It relates to a multi-step gray-scale; from white, through increasingly darker shades of gray, to black. A tint is a value lighter than a color's normal value. For example, pink is a tint of the color red. A shade is a value darker than a color's normal value. Maroon is a shade of the color red.

Intensity is the third quality of color. This aspect is the most important of all for a proper understanding of interior design and decoration. This quality determines how brilliant or how forceful a color tone is. Softer and less aggressive tones are called neutral or neutralized colors.

The most valuable question in using color decoratively is that which refers to the distribution and correct placing of neutralized colors in relation to the more intents ones. The largest errors in the whole realm of color, used in interior decoration, are committed in this area. The following two major principals will clarify this matter for you:

  1. “Backgrounds should be less intense in color than objects that are to appear against them in any decorative way.” What this means is that walls, ceilings, and floors must be less intense in color than hangings, upholstery, pictures, and other decorative aspects.
  2. “The larger the color area the less intense it should be, and the smaller the area the more intense it may be.” According to this principle, hangings and large rugs must normally be less intense in color than toss pillows, lampshades, decorative ceramics, and other accessories. These fundamental ideologies also apply to fashion. For example, for a man, a red necktie is more appealing than a red suit. For a woman, a red flower or ribbon is more decorative on a black stylish hat than a gray ribbon would be on a red hat.

Even the slightest attempt at using color reveals its' power to express your personality. With a little knowledge and wisdom, you can use it to your best advantage.

How To Create An Attractive Home Interior On A Nominal Budget

Furnishing a new house can be an exciting process. This is only true, however, when you have an excellent budget and plenty of time and opportunity to shop around. If you lack cash and want to create a clean, comfortable and well-equipped living space, however, you still have options.

You can start by checking online classified sites to know more about the items that are being offered for free. There may be people in your area who are moving or who've recently gotten new furnishings of their own. Rather than putting their own items up for sale, they simply opt to donate them to others instead. You'll only need to have access to a truck and your own moving team to get them into your home.

It is also a good idea to check out the furnishings that are currently for sale at local thrift stores. This is one of the most affordable ways to get household items. Whenever you opt to use furnishings that have been owned by others, you have to consider the associated risks. For instance, you want to avoid locations that do not take any precautions against bed bugs or any other transportable pest infestations.

Visit a consignment shop and ask where or not they have layaway plans. These offer a much higher quality array of products than do most thrift stores. Working with them will give you access to durable, name brand pieces. Although you will not be able to get everything that you need right away, you can establish a plan to pay your purchases down within a reasonable amount of time.

Even pawn shops have payment plans like these that allow people to purchase big ticket electronics and other household items in small, affordable increments. These locations are great for people who want to decorate with flat screen televisions and large stereo sets. There are even top-quality surround sound systems, gaming consoles and other electronics that you can use to create a comprehensive entertainment area. Your house will look like you spent a fortune but your pockets will not be much lighter at all.

If you are a do-it-yourself enthusiast, look online to see whether or not people are throwing heavily used items out. Refurbishing your own furbishing can actually be a fun and rewarding process. You'll be surprised by the massive amounts of viable materials that are simply being given away on the web.

Think about renting your furnishings. There are companies that have rent-to-own plans so that you can enjoy you furniture even before you've actually paid it off. With flexible rental agreements and super low down payments, arrangements like these can be great even if you have almost no starting money at all.

Working with a furniture rental store can do far more for you than simply help you get a functional house without spending beyond your means. Certain rent to own solutions can actually help you build more positive credit. With these, you can boost your purchasing power and obtain household decor at a reasonable price. In time, you'll even be able to get higher priced furnishings advanced by more conventional furniture stores.

Getting Your Interior Design and Decorating Started Right

Principles Are Principles Forever

Interior design and decorating is one of the oldest of all the arts . Properly understood, it can be very exciting and rewarding to engage in. All you have to do is apply the correct and appropriate formulas, then adapt them to your budget.

It is very important and necessary to find out what you really need and want. Follow a few age-old foundational principles in order to acquire the success that you're driving for. A few easily understood principles will enable you to work out combinations and arrangements that will be appropriate and therefore satisfying to you, no matter what type of room you are planning.

Make It Easy On Yourself

When designing or decorating a room or a whole house, you can help yourself a great deal if you make a careful analysis of yourself and your family before you begin. Take time to consider, reflect, and examine specifics of what you like, what you want, what you do, what you hope to do someday, etc.

Write everything down on paper. Be guided by this analysis in your choice of furniture, arrangements, color schemes, and accessories. Describe in words not only what you want it to look like, but what you want it to feel like as well. For me, a “look” without the appropriate feeling and ambiance is nothing.

Make The Right Decisions The First Time

The best way to do it right, once, the first time, is to have a plan. We begin our plan by making a diagram or sketch of the space, including the windows, doors, and archways, paying careful attention that it's all drawn to scale. It is critical that your room has a floor plan drawn to scale. Usually this means that 1/4 inch will equal 1 foot. If you want it larger, then draw it so 1/2 inch equals 1 foot. This means that 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch will represent an actual 12 inches or 1 foot of real space. You must do the same thing with your furniture, plants, and sculptures – anything that takes up square space space on your floor. If you choose to skip past this initial step, you'll definitely have a wrong perception of reality! Once all of your pieces are sketched to scale, carefully cut each one out, making sure each one is clearly labeled.

You must do everything to scale with your sketches. These paper depictions enable you to move representations of your furniture and other items around effortlessly within your environment on top of the floor plan. As you do so, keep in mind where and how the traffic will flow through the space, accommodating for this functional necessity. With patience and some time, you'll reveal various solutions that will come to your mind that you would never have thought of otherwise. Pre-planning allows you to have much more fun and freedom of expression.

Doing floor plans is the professional way to start. Amateurs skip this. Even if they call themselves decorators or designers, this is one of many fundamental reasons that they are amateurs. If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail … whether you know it or not.

Eliminating “Paralysis of Analysis”

The preliminary analysis of your home interior design and decorating problems should include answers to several definite questions. Think of this as the Sherlock Holmes phase. You want to ask yourself the right questions, to get the right answers. That way, you can get the right results. Your answers to the right questions will have a determination impact on the various phases of your plan. Thinking things through will save you time, money, and energy, as well as preventing possible and probable disappointments with your results.

Some Words of Caution

Do not decorate or design in haste, and then later repent at leisure! Even if you have the money to carry out your whole design and decorating program, do not be rushed into buying anything which will compromise the effect you want.

Do not be discouraged if you have to operate on a budget. Decide what you can comfortably spend in the beginning, and put most of it into basic pieces that will be a permanent investment in your satisfaction and comfort. Then, spread the rest of it out over “pickshifts” which will do until they can be replaced. These pieces will be temporary until you can afford something better. Sometimes they turn out to be so charming and so useful that you will not want to give them up. You can allocate them to other areas of your environment.

As you work your plan, you may find that parts of it need altering as you go because you've found that they can be improved. However, make sure the contemplated improvements fit into the original plan or concept. Remember, it's not only about the look. It's the look and the feel, or ambiance, that you are after.

Do not be tempted for the sake of a bargain, or any other reason, to spend time or money on a single piece or article which will not add to the effectiveness of your preconceived design or decorative scheme, as you have outlined it from the beginning. Also, remember: Proper, prior planning prevents poor performance!

It's vital that you realize that you can spend a great deal of money or a comparatively smaller, realistic sum, and get very pleased results if you have a plan and knowledge.

An Important Closing Comment

Once you work things out on paper, be sure that you have included your floor plans and the written documentation of both your questions and your answers. The rest of the steps must continue to translate that information into action. Always look at the colors and designs in the environment where they are going to be used, and under the lighting conditions there, both natural and artificial. Color is how you light it! Therefore, never guess how textures, colors, designs, or fabrics, etc., will go with each other. Always make your final decisions within the final environment they will be staying in.

Proper care will ensure your precious downs will give you many years of luxury and comfort. We recommend cleaning pillows every 3 years, comforters every 5 years, and renovation of comforters every 10 years. If your downs are only a couple of years old, it is a good idea to air them out. If you have a clothes line, that is good for the comforters and pillows. You would need a patio table or a few chairs for the featherbed or down bed. Do this on a dry sunny warm day. You will be using nature's way to refresh the downs. It will also refluff the downs. If you do not have access to an outdoor line I would suggest hanging the featherbed or down bed over chairs near an open window. For the comforter and pillows I would put in a dryer set on low for 15 minutes. I would recommend airing the featherbed or down bed as often as is practical. If a dryer is your only option for the comforter and pillows I would recommend doing the pillows every couple of weeks and the comforter every 3 months or so. Be sure to keep the dryer on low.

Now it is time to brighten up your bedroom with a whole new look with a new duvet cover and sheet set. The beauty of the down comforter and the duvet cover, which the Europeans invented, is that you can change the look of your bedroom to suit your mood or the season with just a new duvet cover. Co-ordinate with a sheet set, pillowcases, shams and you have a whole new look. A good tip for less laundry of the duvet cover, use a flat top sheet.

Did you know with small changes to your bedroom decor you just might sleep better?

How To Properly Install A Decal The First Time

If you've ever tried installing a decal on your own you know it's pretty much one shot and you're done. There's little to no hope of getting it to come off correctly and if it does chances are it will not lay flat or stick as well. Since we have quite a bit of experience in this department we thought we'd share our tips and tricks on how to install a decal straight the first time!

We like to use what is referred to as the hinge method. For this method all you need is your decal (transfer paper still intact), some blue painters tape, scissors, and a ruler. If possible, place the object you are attaching to decal to on a flat surface, this will make it easier to work with. Decide where you want your decal placed, if you are wanting to center it, measure out the space and use a slight pencil mark or other easily erasable mark to not both the center of the decal and object you're placing it on.

Once you have your decal where you want it, take a large piece of blue painters tape and put it directly across the center going horizontally. Try to make the tape as straight as possible. Be sure to leave over hang so you can attach it to the wall or any other surface you are working on. Before moving on make sure your decal has not shifted at all, if it has just simply lifted one end up to readjust and then put the tape back in place.

Now we're ready to attach the decal . Keep your scissors close for this part! Gently peel back the transfer from the top half of your decal. Hold the transfer paper up and very carefully use your scissors to cut the vinyl backing so that it hits the top of the tape. After you finish your cut you can apply the top half of your decal (hence the name “hinge method”).

Now that the top half of the decal is holding everything in place you can remove the blue painters tape. Now you can apply the bottom half. Use a similar method as before and lift the bottom half up, removing the rest of the vinyl backing. If you have a scraper this is a great opportunity to use it to smooth down the bottom half of your decal. Once everything is in place you can remove the transfer paper and you have now successfully installed a straight decal!

Focal Views Vs Focal Points in Your Interior Design and Interior Decorating

In the realm of interior design you always hear a lot about focal points. Quite often choices include the fireplace, the view, or the grand piano as the focal point. I think too much emphasis is placed on the concept of focal points. Did you notice … I am making a big deal about points? In my estimation, we should be thinking about the views! My concept is all about focal views … like what you see as you look through a video camera. You are, in essence, framing a view, and that view changes with every turn of your head.

The problem with focal points is that they change. For instance, in the winter the fireplace or the views outside could be the focal point. During that same time within that room, the grand piano is the focal point for a person who is musically involved. With this example, depending on the time of year or whether it's light or dark outside, the focal point changes. If you base your room around the concept of focal points; at certain times it will be, and at other times it will not. It may lose its balance and equilibrium at different times and under different circumstances.

I think the concept of focal views is much more realistic, because of the way we actually see. We do not look and see points; we look and see views! You do not look outside your hotel window and say, “What a wonderful point!” You say, “What a wonderful view!” When you go to a restaurant, you do not request that you get the best point, but the table with the best view. Now it might be the best point in the restaurant, but that best point is the one that has the best view.

We have both a cone of view and our peripheral vision. Although we may fixate on a point of interest, by and large we use our cone of view more when taking in our environment. The human eye has an almost 180 ° forward facing horizontal field of view. The vertical range of our field of view is typically around 135 °.

When we take pictures with a camera, we're always looking through a viewfinder of different sections. We compose the shot or the view within the viewfinder. Even though there may be a focal point, or area of interest, it still is a composition, for better or worse.

When you enter a room, you see a focal composition. And that composition changes as you move about the room and turn and look in different directions. Therefore, the focal point within the focal view changes, every time you turn around.

There's no doubt that every composition has a focal point within the composition, whether it be a painting, a photograph, or a room. But, we do not want to fixate on it exclusively. We want our eye to move. We do not want things to be static. We want movement; very much like music. We want things not only to flow, but we also want things to be rhythmic and dynamic, with points of emphasis and relaxation or rest. So, the eye can be in motion, but also alight and rest on something of interest that can be contemplated on.

The idea of focal views is to allow your eye to “take it all in,” while at the same time allowing your eye to stay on things of interest. In this way, you are able to experience your environment in a much more full-bodied way. I think you'll enjoy this new point of view and be guided with a newfound sensitivity to your surroundings and environments wherever you stay and where you go.
