Excellence in design is not as simple as you would think. A complex composition is made up of many interrelated elements that are aesthetically pleasing while serving practical purposes. Design is the sensitive and expertly orchestrated endeavor of creating correct relationships. When done well, great design will delight your eyes, satisfy your soul, and engage your intellect.
In a perfectly furnished room, the parts are so congruous and harmonious in their lines, proportions, and colorings that the space appears to have actually grown that way! Neverheless, it is a purely artistic creation made up of many separate, distinctive elements. These components include floor and wall coverings, furniture, hangings, and an assortment of decorative accessories. Skillful interior design is about expertly choosing and combining all these various elements, while at the same time recognizing excellence, or lack of it, within each individual component.
The foundation for excellence in interior design is based on the principles established centuries ago. The Greeks established most of the architectural orders, along with the mastery of the elements of form, shape, line, and proportion. Add to that the ministry of the freeform curved line, and you begin to get a sense of their intellect. These elements institute some of the tools in the “toolbox” of a true professional designer.
Writing on the art of painting, Leonardo Da Vinci long ago observed that “Those who become enamored of the practice of the art without having previously applied themselves to the diligent study of the scientific part of it, may be compared to mariners who put to sea without rudder or compass, and therefore can not be certain of arriving at the wished-for port.
Every design, no matter its character or style, consists essentially of a plan and its details. The finer points must be subordinate to and coordinated with the overall concept for a spectacular design. When we follow these fundamental principles, we're able to create harmony within the design while tailoring it exclusively for you.
The process of combining multiple components and elements of interior design into a holistic presentation is all about the “art of composition.” For example, poetry combines words into phrases, lines, and stanzas in such ways that each word and phrase synchronizes as it complements the others, unifying the experience as a whole. Musical composition combines notes and tones into delightful relationships known as chords. These chords harmonize into rhythm, tonality, melody, and expression. Interior design and decoration uses lines, shapes, colors, and textures. More concretely, the rugs, wall coverings, fabrics, furniture, pictures, statue, pottery, and lamps are incorporated and “woven” together in such a way that each of them are helping the other look even more stunning and beautiful. The total composition is not only holistic, but synergistic as well.
What does it mean when I say “Words or tones help each other?” It means that each of them contribute, according to its own nature and in the most effective and aesthetically enhancing way possible, towards the expression of the common idea or concept.
When things harmonize, or go well together, they share a similar significance and therefore concur in the expression of a common idea or concept. Orchestrating and directing everything to say one thing is imperative. That way, the room does not “mumble.” Instead, it communicates clearly the intent of the design in terms of the look, feel, and ambiance.
Unlike a picture or a sculpture, a room is not complete in and of itself. It becomes whole and fulfilled only when there are people in it and enjoying it. It's not in existence solely for itself, but primarily to provide a sympathetic and pleasant background for the people who live in it. A dynamic setting is supportive of you in every way possible.
It is, as it is … so eloquently stated as my trademark philosophy “When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.” Moreover, “Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent effort.” A distinguished look and feel, plus the magic of ambiance, is what soon sets you and your home apart from any other space you've ever enjoyed.
